Sun protection is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your skin healthy. Too much sun can cause sunburn, premature ageing and an increased risk of skin cancer. Fortunately, a few everyday habits offer excellent protection.
Here is how to care for your skin in the sun.
Use sunscreen every day
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of harmful rays, and apply it generously to all exposed skin. Reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
Seek shade
The sun is strongest in the middle of the day. Take breaks in the shade, especially during these hours, and plan outdoor activities for earlier or later when you can.
Cover up
Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and lightweight clothing with long sleeves provide excellent protection without the need to reapply.
Protect children
Children's skin is especially delicate. Keep babies out of direct sun and make sun protection a fun, everyday habit for older children.
Check your skin
Get to know your skin and look out for new moles or changes in existing ones, such as changes in size, shape or colour. Report anything unusual to a clinician promptly.
Remember that skin can burn even on cloudy days, and reflective surfaces such as water and sand increase exposure.
Staying hydrated and using a gentle moisturiser helps keep skin comfortable after time outdoors.
